Latitude Geographics and Atomic Crayon tops in VIATeC’s Softball League
June 28, 2010. Victoria, BC – VIATeC’s softball league wrapped up last week with Latitude Geographics finishing first in league play and Atomic Crayon taking the championship at the end of season tournament.
The second year of running the league saw growth to include ten teams whose staff had a great opportunity to get to know their peers from other companies as they met each week for recreational softball. The league is run by a dedicated group of volunteers who worked hard to ensure that things ran smoothly and everyone had fun playing.
“Bringing knowledge workers together in a casual manner helps foster relationships within the technology community,” said Dan Gunn, VIATeC’s executive director. “We were delighted to see the way teams encouraged each other to learn new skills and enjoyed light competition in a fun environment. Congratulations to all the teams and many thanks to the volunteers.”
The VIATeC softball league began last year and is intended to provide a networking opportunity while allowing everyone to get some exercise as they challenge themselves to develop skills and good sportsmanship. The non-competitive nature means that those who have never played can enjoy themselves, often coached by members of opposing teams.
League play ran for 10 weeks with Latitude Geographics finishing in top position.
The season end tournament brought out families on a sunny Saturday and featured the presentation of the coveted Twizzler Trophy to tournament champion Atomic Crayon. Schneider Electric finished in second place and the northStudio/RevenueWire team tied with the Independent team for third place. The volunteer run barbeque raised over $300 for the Society for Advancement of Young Scientists.
Technology companies are encouraged to contact VIATeC to join the league for next year. Space in the league is reserved for one community team made up of the staff of VIATeC member companies who do not have enough players to form a full team. This team was the most improved, moving from the bottom of the league last year to third place this year.
League play starts in April.
