Introducing teenagers to technology careers

High school students will be hurling objects, making amplifiers for their iPod players, building earthquake-resistant towers and programming Lego Mindstorm Robots during Camosun’s 4th annual technology summer camp, July 12-16.

DiscoverTech@Camosun will be a fun and action-packed week for 10 young people as they learn how math, physics, electronics and computer programming can lead to a wide choice of high-tech careers.

“This year the Department of National Defence will provide a tour for our students, “ said April Atkins, Enrolment and Promotions Assistant for Camosun’s School of Trades and Technology. “Our past two DiscoverTech programs have enjoyed this opportunity on a guided tour of the Fleet School and even have lunch on their ship.”

To windup the week, students will gain a real-world career perspective by touring the Department of National Defence Friday morning, followed by afternoon competitions and showcasing their projects to friends and family.

The week’s activities cover four different technology fields
Monday
Civil Engineering—use a professional architectural kit to build a skyscraper from real blueprints
Tuesday
Electronics Engineering—assemble an amp to hook up to your IPod player, microphone, speakers and an electric guitar
Wednesday
Mechanical Engineering—design and build a spring action catapult to see who can hurl objects the farthest
Thursday
Computer Systems—work with Leo Mindstorm Robotics to program and design your own lego robot
