The names have been announced for Business in Vancouver’s Top 40 Under 40 Awards and Dan Gunn, Executive Director of VIATeC (Victoria Advanced Technology Council) has made the list, along with Troy Fimrite of Viking Pacific Inc. and former COO of Abebooks, Boris Wertz. With 38 of the award recipients being from Vancouver, Gunn and Fimrite are the only executives in Victoria to receive this recognition.

Gunn originally joined VIATeC as a consultant on a seven-month contract in 2000. Since taking the reigns as Executive Director in 2005, revenues and membership for the once struggling technology industry association have doubled. Gunn also serves as Chair and CEO of the BC Regional Science and Technology Network which has secured close to $10 million in funding support for regional science councils and projects focused on growing BC's knowledge economy since the beginning of his tenure.

"I am honoured to be added to this list that is so heavily populated with candidates from the lower mainland," commented Gunn. "I can not say what it takes to be chosen for something like this, but I do know that I would not even be considered if not for the support of my wife, my board, my staff and my mentors. I truly hope they know that I share any accolades with them. They are an amazing group of people and I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by them."

Fimrite co-founded his first company, Wilderness Adventures International in 1990. Moving into the oil and gas business, Fimrite would found, co-found and/or operate a number of companies in Grande Prairie, including Fimrite Holdings, Fimrite SubTerra Services, Peace Petroleum and Fimrite Oilfield Services Ltd., as well as excavating franchise Badger Daylighting Inc.

His latest venture, Viking Pacific Inc., has 10 employees and is a hub for investment brokers. “We basically are a platform for deal-makers to work through when people want to merge or acquire other businesses,” explains Fimrite.

The contribution each of the 40 award winners has made to their organizations, to business in BC and to their communities is a cause worth celebration. Business in Vancouver has celebrated BC’s up and coming business stars for more than 20 years. Sponsored by the Certified General Accountants Association of British Columbia (CGA-BC), this year’s awards will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, 6:30pm – 9:00pm.
