After two and a half years of hard work and study, Camosun’s tech students have just one last assignment before earning their diplomas, and that’s to showcase their final projects to the public and prospective employers.

The Capstone Symposium is being organized by the graduating students of two programs: Computer Systems Technology and Electronics & Computer Engineering Technology – Renewable Energy. The event will be held Thursday, June 16, 2011 in the East Harbour Ballroom in the Harbor Towers Hotel & Suites, 345 Quebec Street, Victoria, BC.

The public is invited to attend from 1-4pm to hear the 14 student teams give short presentations about their projects, including:

  • BeetleBot - a six-legged robotic beetle, designed to move in any terrain
  • CUBE – a 52-inch multi-touch display, that can be used like a giant iPod for everyday applications as well as in the classroom as a digital whiteboard
  • Kinectt-in-Motion – a wheelchair controlled through head movement using a Kinect motion sensor
  • TeamExtreme – a web application to support event coordinators in recruiting and managing contact information for volunteers

A full list and description of all team projects, including team bios and client profiles, is posted online at www.camosun.ca/capstone.

From 5-7pm, the Victoria Advanced Technology Council (VIATeC) is sponsoring a networking event, to bring the region’s high tech employers together with the now employable grads.

“This networking session is a great opportunity for students to meet employers,” says Sukhpal Parmar, one of the graduating Electronics students. “By showcasing our projects we are also showcasing our skills and talents. And by meeting the VIATeC members, we get to learn more about the companies we might want to work for.”
