Local Start-ups Join Forces: Couvon Acquires Goya Deal
In a purchase that joins two local ‘daily deals’ start-ups, Victoria-based Couvon has acquired the name, platform and operating rights to Goya Deal.
The purchase - planned to help Couvon build on its early success - gives the Victoria firm further reach into the fast-growing ‘daily deals’ market. “It’s an opportunity for us to offer better value to our subscribers, and exciting new opportunities for our merchants,” says Goya’s Marco Pimentel, who is spearheading the company’s push, “We’re excited to help more people rediscover their cities.”
Since launching just one year ago, Couvon has successfully capitalized on the ‘group buy’ phenomenon, offering subscribers group deals on everything from dining, to retail, to recreation. As both companies are based in Victoria and focus on local offers, Pimentel says the transition feels natural: “We’re both home-grown start-ups, and our ethos align well. Goya subscribers love our service because we celebrate local, and Couvon shares this focus.” Pimentel joins the company through Goya Deal, and believes his connections with local businesses will help spur continued growth at Couvon.
Couvon hopes the acquisition will allow it to further carve its niche in the BC daily deals market, bringing its discount offers to other communities throughout the Province. Couvon Co-Founder Tobyn Sowden says the purchase is well-timed: “During recessions, consumers need discounts, and businesses need affordable means of promotion – especially in smaller communities,” he says, “Our platform provides both.”
The global daily deals industry continued its skyward trend in the month of September, growing an estimated 12%. The trend is expected to continue, as both consumers and businesses seek ways to deal with prolonged economic uncertainty.
