2017 VIATEC Technology Awards Finalists Announced

Scott Phillips named 2017 Technology Champion

April 11, 2017  (Victoria, BC) - The Victoria high-tech sector has announced the finalists for the 16th Annual VIATEC Technology Awards. Winners will be revealed at the gala on the evening of June 2nd at the Victoria Conference Centre.

The awards celebrate the achievements of technology companies responsible for making Greater Victoria the fastest growing technology region in BC, as well as the leaders, creators and innovators that have driven the local tech sector to over $3.15 billion in annual sales and Victoria’s largest private industry.

After sifting through an outstanding 141 nominations, 48 finalists (35 companies) have been selected for 12 award categories, and an additional 4 recipients were selected for some prestigious awards.

Scott Phillips (StarFish Medical), will receive the Colin Lennox Award for Technology Champion, and RevenueWire will receive the VIATEC Member of the Year award.

Dan Gunn, CEO of VIATEC explained, “I've had the pleasure of knowing Scott Phillips for more than 15 years and I've seen his dedication to our tech community as a VIATEC board member, volunteer mentor, CEO round table chair and most importantly, as an example of how to join, lead and participate in building a strong tech community. Our tech community is stronger for having him among us and I think Colin Lennox would be proud to see Scott recognized in this manner.”

“RevenueWire and their team are model members. They come to every event we host with big smiles and network like crazy. They exhibit at events and make them better, they give us support and feedback at peer round tables and other meetings, they get behind VIATEC food bank challenges with big raises and fun ideas, and finally, RevenueWire CEO, Bobbi Leach, is a great board member,” commented Gunn.

Added to this year’s category roster is the Community Involvement Award which ParetoLogic will receive, and also the Newcomer Award which will go to Scott Lake.

“ParetoLogic has been a strong contributor to our community for years thanks to the passion behind the Pereira family and their team members,” continued Gunn.

Just in the past year ParetoLogic has contributed to 11 separate charities or initiatives, including some outside of Victoria: the Edward and Maggie Pires Center in North Goa, India; Journey, previously Change Heroes (they built houses in Mexico); and Canadian Red Cross (Fort McMurray Wildfires).

“It’s about time we recognize them for going way above and beyond.”

“The spell of Victoria’s charm and opportunity worked on Scott Lake, formerly of Shopify. Since moving here from Toronto, he’s shared a wealth of experience as an Executive in Residence for our Accelerator Program, accompanied Mayor Helps to San Francisco on a trade mission to help explain the merits of building tech companies in Victoria, and has even opened up as a speaker at one of our events. Scott has dived head first into our tech community, not wasting any time at all. We couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of the first ever Newcomer Award.”

The Capital Investment Network (CIN) has introduced their own Angel of the Year Award which will be presented to Rasool Rayani at VIATEC’s awards gala. Rasool receives this award for raising the profile of local angel investing, demonstrating a high level of investor acumen, serving as a mentor to other angels and entrepreneurs and for setting a positive example within the angel community.

Over 60% of tickets have already sold to June 2nd’s gala which can hold 800 guests. The elaborate celebration is expected to sell out once again and promises to continue to raise the bar.
