Check your Power and Privilege

Companies should be working to create more diversity, equity and inclusion within and outside of their organization. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it makes clear business sense. New research is proving companies with more diverse workforces in gender, race and ethnicity perform better financially. Companies in the top quartile for gender diversity outperform their competitors by 15% and those in the top quartile for ethnic diversity outperform their competitors by 35%.

We know that inclusive workplaces foster positive cultures that minimize bias and recognize and address systemic inequities so that no one is disadvantaged. We also know it takes learning and intentional effort to achieve this.

VIATEC wants to help you explore diversity, equity and inclusion and what it means for you and your workplace with a 4 part learning series. Each session will help you understand the topic, assess yourself and/or your workplace, and implement new practices to champion change.

Session 1, July 15: How to Create an Equitable, Diverse and Inclusive Workplace

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion – How do we get there? What does it mean to create an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace and how can you do it?

Session 2, July 22: Identify What's in the Way at Your Workplace

Barriers to Equity and Inclusion – How do you uncover institutional and individual barriers?

Session 3, July 29: Understand and Address your Bias

Understanding Bias – In what ways are we biased? How does it shape our thinking and decision-making? How do we check our bias?

Session 4, Aug 6, 1-2pm: Check your Power and Privilege

Identity, Power, and Privilege – How do we define ourselves? What aspects of our identities confer power and privilege? How do we redirect our power and privilege to create workplaces that are more inclusive for those with less?

We've partnered with Leah Shumka, Manager of Sexualized Violence Education, Prevention and Support at the faculty of Equity and Human Rights, UVic to explore each of these issues in an interactive format.

Please take the time to share your questions with us as part of the registration process so that we can make each session as applicable and actionable as possible.
