    17th Annual VIATEC Awards prove
Greater Victoria’s #1 industry not slowing down

VICTORIA, BC (June 18, 2018) – Last Friday night at the Royal Theatre, the VIATEC Awards celebrated the innovation and excellence of individuals and technology companies responsible for making Victoria the fastest growing technology region in British Columbia. A record breaking total of 54 finalists were honoured, with 16 recipients receiving new robot trophies (designed by Russell Papp), at the elaborate show. Attendance ballooned to over 1000 guests making it one of the largest celebrations of its kind in the nation.

Known for going over the top in the crowded pantheon of business award galas, Erin Skillen took the reigns as host for this year’s production. Billed as an “Art Deco Cabaret”, the night featured five variety show acts from Atomic Vaudeville and a powerful finale accompanied by "the Choir and the Chorus" and, in what has become an annual tradition, flying inflatable Killer Whales. A stunning set designed and built by local artist “Jimbo” Insell and Studio Robazzo framed the stage and was brought to life by immersive video projections from Hololabs and reactive lighting by Limbic Media. The resident “Vecima Ritz” live band brought the audience to their feet, and everyone continued the celebration at the After Party with local talents Rara Avis and Distant Grand.

“It is our honour to produce a show that brings together and entertains our tech community and we relish the opportunity to highlight and celebrate some of our top performing companies and executives,” said Dan Gunn, CEO of VIATEC. “Each year gets more elaborate and we cannot say enough about our local arts community and what they bring to make this event the unique and anticipated festivity it is has become.”

Barnacle Systems and Locelle make it to Small Business BC's Top 10 Best Concept List

The Small Business BC Awards recognize the outstanding achievements of BC's entrepreneurs. These awards are a celebration of the contributions small business owners make to their local communities and to the global economy. It's free to enter and open to all new and existing small businesses in BC.

The votes have been tallied and the Top 10 Semi-Finalists for the 2019 Small Business BC Awards have been announced. Among the semi-finalists are Victoria's own Barnacle Systems (BRNKL) and Locelle Digital Inc, both of which are in the Top 10 for Best Concept. See the Top 10s for each category right here.

    What's next:

    1. As a Top 10 finalist, they'll be given one month to provide the expert panel of judges a more detailed application outlining why they deserve to win the award. These applications will be assessed to narrow down competition to the Top 5 finalists.
    2. Come February 4th, the Top 5 in each category will be required to make a ten minute pitch explaining why their business trumps the other finalists in their category. If they can convince the judges that their business really is the best, then they’ll be selected as the winner.
    3. February 21st: Awards Gala! Each winner will be recognized with a cash prize in the amount of $1,500,  a one-year all-access pass to Small Business BC education resources and experts, business mentorship from the award sponsor and the opportunity for extensive media exposure.

    About Barnacle Systems:

Barnacle Systems Inc. is a boat security and monitoring company based in Victoria. Founded in 2017, the team at Barnacle has developed an innovative new surveillance product for the marine industry called BRNKL.

BRNKL is for boat owners who need to be able to check in on their vessel remotely from their smartphone, tablet, or computer. BRNKL is also for yacht monitoring and charter companies who need a simple dashboard outlining the health and status of all their boats.

Like a ‘home security system for your boat’ users can see inside of their vessel(s) using an onboard camera while also monitoring critical alerts such as anchor drag, low batteries, loss of shore power and high-water.  Unlike standard marine electronics that provide monitoring while you’re on board, BRNKL has a built-in global cellular service. So, whether you’re at the dock, at home, or halfway around the world your boat is at your fingertips.

    About Locelle Digtial:

Locelle is a next-generation women-only networking platform providing a safer and easier way to meet up with like-minded women (friends, mentors, business connections). Unlike Facebook, Bumble, Meetups, Slack and other platforms, we create real connections by finding nearby matches based on interests, location, activities and time using our proprietary technology. Our business model is B2B2C with users from SAP, Microsoft, IBM on the platform.

Companies have challenges attracting and retaining women employees, especially in the current social environment, where movements like #metoo and #timesup bring about diversity and inclusion initiatives. Highly topical for the above challenge is social isolation, which affects millions of women around the world and have chronic long-term condition in terms of impact they have on health & well being. Since launching a month ago, Locelle has already made many meaningful connections for women in Victoria and Vancouver.

Charter Subsidiary Boardwalk Communications Wins Award of Excellence at Cisco Summit

VICTORIA, BC--(Marketwired - November 14, 2016) - Boardwalk Communications (Boardwalk), a recent acquisition of Charter Telecom Inc. (Charter), both Victoria-based information technology (IT) leaders, has received the 2016 Architectural Excellence, Enterprise Networking award for Canada from Cisco Systems, Inc., the world's largest networking company.

Boardwalk's Vice President of Sales, Philip Stone, accepted the award at the Cisco Partner Summit on November 1, 2016 in San Francisco, California.

In granting the award, Cisco singled out Boardwalk's dedication to the Cisco partnership that has resulted in tremendous growth, year after year:

"Selling to all segments with an increasing focus on healthcare-specific solutions, Boardwalk grew their Enterprise Network business over 100% in fiscal year 2016 (FY 16) -- earning them the award for Architectural Excellence -- a first for Boardwalk."

It's this kind of performance that drew the attention of Charter, which is also having an award-winning year -- Charter was recognized as one of North America's "20 Most Promising IT Infrastructure Solution Providers" for 2016 by U.S.-based CIOReview magazine.

Discussions between the two companies led to the acquisition of Boardwalk by Charter; the purchase was announced on April 4, 2016.

At the time, Charter president Kelly Michell called it "a coming together of highly-recognized, industry-respected, like-minded organizations with well-aligned values and operating principles."

The deal allows for the creation of a national network technology leader that will offer a full spectrum of products and services to customers across Canada. The combined company will add Cisco solutions along with product offerings from current partners: Juniper Networks and Avaya.

Said Charter's Michell: "Together, Charter and Boardwalk are exponentially more capable of providing clients with powerful IT solutions to their business problems. We now have the capacity of the bigger IT companies in the field without losing focus on the impeccable customer service and understanding of business needs that has brought us both to this point."

    About Charter

Charter was founded in 1997 and ever since it has continued to lead the way in technology innovation, customer service, operational excellence, and cutting-edge solutions. Charter provides communications technology expertise thereby helping clients grow, maximizing their assets and speeding up business process.

BCIC New Ventures Competition Awards Ceremony, Vancouver, BC - September 26, 2016 - LlamaZOO Interactive Inc. ("LlamaZOO") was named the Top Regional Startup winner in the 2016 BCIC New Ventures Competition. This award is accompanied by a $10,000 cash prize, and recognizes LlamaZOO as the top placing venture located outside Metro Vancouver in New Ventures BC’s annual province-wide business competition for early stage tech companies.

“We have made several tremendous advancements over the past few months, both with EasyAnatomy specifically, and overall as a company. Winning this award is greatly appreciated recognition for our progress as a business, and for our team’s huge effort over the summer.” said LlamaZOO’s co-founder and CEO Charles Lavigne.

This year’s BCIC New Ventures Competition began with over 165 entrants.
